UAE Announces Changes to Residency Procedures: Foreign students can bring their families
Published on: 25 January 2021

In changes announced yesterday, foreign students studying in the UAE can now bring family members, as long as they have the financial means to support themselves and live in suitable accommodation.

The cabinet approved the resolution yesterday, thus incentivizing more students to choose the UAE as a study destination.

On Twitter, His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai said:

“Today, we also approved changes in the residency and citizenship procedures in the country by enabling foreign students to bring their families, whenever they have the financial means. The UAE has become a regional educational destination with more than 77 universities and tens of thousands of students annually.”

The United Arab Emirates has grown in popularity among international students with high-ranking universities, excellent lifestyle options, and plenty to do off-campus. The UAE government is now hoping to attract even more students from abroad.

The process of obtaining a student visa is also straightforward. A list of participating universities is available through the government website. Anyone seeking to enroll can check out the requirements, as well as the study and accommodation options on offer at each university.

Aware of the magnitude of the challenges posed by the Covid-19 pandemic at the global level, the UAE government wanted to address the difficult conditions during the current coronavirus crisis. Students, in particular, had been facing restrictions when it comes to reuniting with family members. Now, international students can gather and live in one place with their loved ones.

The changes brought in by the government emphasizes once again, that the UAE has always been keen to provide the best social conditions for residents especially when it comes to family unity.

To international students, these changes to residency and citizenship procedures will come as a sigh of relief as they can now enjoy the benefits of studying in the UAE without having to worry about family separation.

Mature students undergoing a Ph.D. will also welcome the announcement. With many of them married with children, they are now more likely to choose the UAE as their study destination.
