Iraqi authorities have launched a digital visa application system for Turkish nationals, beginning with those traveling for business and investment purposes. The announcement was made during a formal event at the Iraqi Embassy in Ankara.

Speaking at the ceremony, Iraq’s Ambassador to Türkiye, Majid Abdul-Ridha Hassan Al-Lajmawi, confirmed that the e-visa program is now operational in Ankara. He credited the initiative to close coordination between Iraq’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Interior.

Nashat Al-Khafaji, who leads Iraq’s Civil Status and Passports Directorate, described the shift as part of a wider move toward digitization within government services. He stated that the new visa system would begin operating in Istanbul next week.

Interior Ministry spokesperson Abbas Al-Bahadli explained that this new visa is designed to support economic ties with Türkiye by making it faster and easier for Turkish business professionals to enter Iraq. Applicants can expect to receive decisions within 24 hours, and the visa comes with the option of extension.

Al-Khafaji added that transitioning to a digital system would not only save time but also improve service quality and reliability. He said it represents a meaningful step in modernizing Iraq’s visa infrastructure.

Flight connectivity between the two countries remains strong. Istanbul is currently linked to Baghdad and Erbil through 17 weekly flights each. There are also regular services to Basrah and Najaf. With the new e-visa framework in place, a noticeable rise in travel demand is expected from Turkish nationals.

This latest development reflects Iraq’s broader push to improve its business climate and streamline international entry procedures. By focusing on digital access, the country hopes to attract more foreign investment and strengthen regional partnerships, beginning with its neighbor, Türkiye.
