Libya Overview

Located in North Africa, Libya is the fourth largest country in the African continent and is about the size of Germany, Spain, Portugal, France, and the UK combined. 90% of the country is made up of the desert, and the majority of the population is spread along the more fertile strip of the Mediterranean coast.

The country’s capital, Tripoli, and the second-largest city, Benghazi, are both located near the coast. Libya’s climate is dominated by the Sahara Desert but along the coast, the winter season is cool and rainy and the summer season is hot and dry. The warmest months are July and August while the coolest are January and February. The official language of Libya is Arabic.
